Question: With so many wine gadgets on the market, are there any that you’re particularly fond of?

I generally avoid most wine gadgets—beyond a corkscrew and quality wine glasses, there’s little else truly necessary to enjoy wine to its fullest. However, there’s one tool I wholeheartedly recommend: a decanter.
Decanters come in various shapes and sizes, but functionality matters far more than aesthetics. The type of decanter you choose can significantly impact the wine, depending on its age and style.
Young Wines:
Decanting young wines primarily introduces oxygen, which enhances their aromas and flavors. For this, a large decanter with a wide surface area is ideal, as it maximizes oxygen exposure. A vigorous pour into the decanter can further help aerate the wine, softening its tannins and opening up its character.
Older Wines:
Older wines, having already interacted with oxygen over time, need less aeration. Decanting them is mainly about separating the wine from sediment that may have accumulated in the bottle. A smaller decanter with limited headspace is best for this purpose. Pour gently to avoid disturbing the sediment, ensuring the wine remains clear and enjoyable.
White and Sparkling Wines:
Decanting isn’t just for reds! Young white wines can benefit from some air exposure to soften their acidity and enhance their texture. For sparkling wines, decanting might seem unconventional, but it can work well with young, high-quality Champagnes. Use a tall, narrow decanter to preserve bubbles and keep it chilled on ice. While you may lose some effervescence, the added complexity and depth can make the trade-off worthwhile.
Ultimately, a decanter is a versatile tool that can elevate your wine experience, whether you’re working with a robust young red, an elegant aged bottle, or even a bold white or sparkling wine.
